The Political Economy of Journalism

In the past, JMAD has organised multiple international and national conferences. In 2024, we hosted an IAMCR pre-conference, the Political Economy of Journalism, which was attended by scholars from nine countries. The topics of the conference included AI and news, platforms and news, platform regulation, journalism innovation, future prospects of journalism, trust in news and  teaching journalism. In his keynote speech, Professor Victor Pickard provoked participants to reimagine journalism. 

Past conferences

2018

The conference theme was Journalism, Media and Surveillance, and keynote speakers included professor Mark Andrejevic, professor Ann Goldson and investigative journalist Nicky Hager,

2014

The conference theme was Media, War and Memory, and keynote speakers included Professor Andrew Hoskins and Fay Anderson.

2012

The 2012 conference was themed Media histories: New Zealand, Australia, South Pacfic. Keynote speaker was Professor Peter Putnis.

Past conferences and panels

2011

The conference was themed the Political Economy of Communication. Professors Graham Murdock, Janet Wasko and Dwayne Winseck were keynote speakers at the conference.

2010

The first JMAD conference was themed Media, Democracy and Public Sphere. Keynote speaker of the conference was Associate Professor Peter Thompson from Victoria University of Wellington.

2019 panel discussion

In 2019, JMAD organised a panel discussion with the theme Mediating terror after the Christchurch Mosque shootings. The panel members included Professor Wayne Hope, Professor Verica Rupar, Associate Professor Vijay Devas and Lecturer Khairiah Rahman.
